An emery board is used to smooth defects in leather (particularly those caused by damage to the leather and raised portions from repairs). Very fine grit file, emery, or sandpaper is required to smooth the leather sufficiently to provide a good surface to repolish. Filed leather usually requires redying, as the layer removed by the file usually contain the majority of the pigment.
